Handbells

St Andrew's Church has an historic set of handbells that were purchased when the tower bells were installed in 1886. A handbell group meets fortnightly to practise on Sundays and plays regularly for services. Rehearsals are held in the choir vestry at the rear of the Church.

Handbells were invented in 17th century England when neighbours of bell towers tired of listening to long change-ringing rehearsals. Handbells permitted the rehearsals to take place in the spirited warmth of pubs!
